    Jared Schachner named a JCHS John R. Meyer Dissertation Fellow

    Awardee | Jared Schachner, PhD candidate in Sociology & Social Policy, has been named a 2019 John R. Meyer Dissertation Fellow by the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies. Schachner is using Los Angeles County to examine how parents make choices about neighborhoods and schools in an era of liberalized, choice-oriented urban policies, and how those choices affect educational outcomes for children.

    Harvard Magazine | James Biblarz, Ph.D. student in Sociology and Social Policy and a tutor in Eliot House, received the Undergraduate Council’s John R. Marquand Prize for exceptional advising and counseling. The prize, awarded annually in May, recognizes an individual "who contributes to the quality of undergraduate life and education," with a focus on those who bring "skill and generosity in advising, counseling, and helping students.”

    Awardee | John Marshall, Ph.D. candidate in Government, is a recipient of the Midwest Political Science Association's 2016 Kellogg/Notre Dame Award for Best Paper in Comparative Politics for his paper, "Information acquisition, local media, and electoral Accountability: When do Mexican voters punish Incumbents for high homicide rates?" Marshall will join the faculty of Columbia University in July as Assistant Professor of Political Science.     Kelley Fong awarded Doris Duke Fellowship for the Promotion of Child Well-Being

    Awardee | Kelley Fong, Ph.D. student in Sociology & Social Policy, has been awarded a Doris Duke Fellowship for the Promotion of Child Well-Being by Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago. The two-year fellowship is designed to cultivate doctoral scholars whose work can generate "practice and policy initiatives that will enhance child development and improve the nation's ability to prevent all forms of child maltreatment."

    Kelley Fong receives ESS Candace Rogers Student Paper Award

    Awardee | Kelley Fong, PhD candidate in Sociology & Social Policy, is the 2017 winner of the Eastern Sociological Society's Candace Rogers Award for most outstanding paper by a graduate student. The award for her paper, "Child Welfare Reporting and Poor Mothers’ Disengagement," was presented in February at the ESS annual meeting in Philadelphia.
