The JPEO is the first leading forum for the new economics of participation, economic analysis of new participatory work practices, and shared capitalism.

The Journal of Participation and Employee Ownership is the only mainstream journal for rigorous research on shared capitalism, employee ownership, profit sharing, gainsharing, and broad-based stock option.

Co-editor Prof Kato said of the launch of the new journal: “Presently, there is no rigorous peer-reviewed journal to bring diverse research communities together with a common goal of deepening our understanding of diverse forms of employee participation and compensation systems. ... JPEO is aimed at filling this important gap by providing a leading global forum for high-quality original theoretical and empirical research in the broad area of employee participation and alternative compensation systems."

Richard B. Freeman holds the Herbert Ascherman Chair in Economics at Harvard University. He is currently serving as Faculty co-Director of the Labor and Worklife Program at the Harvard Law School, and is Senior Research Fellow in Labour Markets at the London School of Economics' Centre for Economic Performance. He directs the National Bureau of Economic Research / Science Engineering Workforce Projects, and is Co-Director of the Harvard Center for Green Buildings and Cities.

Takao Kato is W.S. Schupf Professor in Far Eastern Studies and Professor of Economics at Colgate University.
