About the speaker

Patrick Sharkey is Professor of Sociology and Public Affairs. He received his PhD in Sociology and Social Policy from Harvard and is a former Inequality & Social Policy doctoral fellow. Sharkey was formerly Chair of Sociology at New York University, served as Scientific Director at Crime Lab, New York, and is the founder of AmericanViolence.org.

He is the author of  Stuck in Place: Urban Neighborhoods and the End of Progress Toward Racial Equality (University of Chicago Pressm 2013) and Uneasy Peace: The Great Crime Decline, the Renewal of City Life, and the Next War on Violence (W.W. Norton, 2018).

In 2015 he received the William Julius Wilson Early Career Award from the Inequality, Poverty, and Mobility section of the American Sociological Association.
