Real Reform, Real Suppression: Criminal Records, Disenfranchisement, and Spillovers in 2022

Christopher Uggen, Regents Professor and Martindale Chair in Sociology, Law, and Public Affairs, University of Minnesota

Abstract: On the eve of Election Day, this talk considers the persistence, change, and recent evolution of voting restrictions for people with criminal records. After sharing highlights of Locked Out 2022, a forthcoming report with the Sentencing Project, I will open a broader discussion of the spillover effects of punishment on US politics, labor markets, and health, the latter drawing from a new book, Prisons and Health in the Age of Mass Incarceration (2022, Oxford, with Jason Schnittker and Mike Massoglia).
